Getting organised can be a hard task, staying organised can be even harder. I’m lucky in the sense that I love being organised and nothing brings me more joy than everything in its place and having a bundle of lists to work my way through, not to mention the constant reminders I have set on my phone – just in case I come off track. I could sit and write about organisation all day long so to avoid boring the hell out of you, I’ll start with the basics.
Dear Diary
Get yourself a diary! I do this every year and I get quite excited about diary buying day (I know what you’re thinking). Your diary should be lightweight so that you can keep it in your bag and have it to hand ready to jot down any notes, ideas or events that crop up. Being a working girl with a side-hustle, my brain constantly works overtime so I like to have somewhere that I can quickly scribble down any ideas – ah so that reminds me, be sure to also have a pen handy too. I even take my diary to bed with me and have it on the side table so that I can note down any last-minute thoughts before bed – this is a good tip for those who struggle sleeping due to an overactive mind.
Once you have purchased your diary, grab a coffee and prepare to organise your year. I start by adding in the major events such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, christenings and anything else that is booked in advance or re-occurring. I then make a note the week before to buy any gifts, cards or outfits so that I don’t forget and end up bustling around the shops at the last minute in a blind panic.
Week 1
I then start with week 1, I make notes of what I need to do throughout the week and assign days to have these tasks complete – this keeps me on schedule. I note down everything from what I plan to eat for tea through to specific deadlines both work and personal. I also make a note each Thursday to remind myself to do an inventory check of the fridge and cupboards ready for making a shopping list (more to come on that in another post). As I work through each day, I’ll take a few minutes to check on my list on cross anything off that has been completed – that’s the fun part. Seeing how you progress each day can be very rewarding and you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment each night. I also find that it is a great motivator in the morning as I will visit my diary while having a cup of tea and make a mental plan of how I will achieve each task around working my day job, tending to my side-hustle, looking after pets and carrying out chores.
At the end of each week, I reflect on what I have accomplished and start the cycle again by planning the week ahead. The best part is, by December you can look back on your year and see how far you have come, what you would change and make plans to achieve bigger and better things next year.
